One of the main goals for a website is to increase conversions, traffic to the website and ultimately make the sales hit the roof.

Why keyword research is important for SEO

It’s important to understand that the focus should be on targeted traffic and not just any kind of traffic in order to get the best chance of converting website visits into sales. There are many reasons why a website might not be performing, however a good place to start looking is the keywords. Keyword research is the “foundation” of the website. This will determine how the website is structured and what content is needed for the different landing pages etc.

The time spent on keyword research will pay off later in terms of sales and traffic to the site. The keyword research will determine what users are searching for in order to find specific products and services. That’s why it’s so important to target the right keywords for your business to increase the chances of ranking higher on search engine results pages (SERP).

What is keyword research?

Keyword research means finding out what keywords or search terms, users are searching for on search engines such as Google Search, Yahoo and Bing. This helps to determine what content is needed for the landing pages in order to drive traffic to the website.
As an example, let’s have a look at Google. Their aim is to display quality websites within the search results that could best answer a user’s question.

If you are looking to increase your organic traffic and rank higher on Google, the key is to give the best possible basis for Google to crawl your website. The best way to get this started would be through an in-depth keyword research. Higher rankings means more traffic!

SEO Ranking and position

Let’s assume that you are selling different types of ‘hair shampoo’ and you have various product pages for each product. The product name you choose for each landing and categories page will be a result of the keyword research. The keyword research will reveal what users are searching for and what is related to the subject. You will have to structure the titles and on page optimisation SEO to match the keyword research. If this process is not followed and you choose your own names for the products and categories, the website will rank very low on Google searches.
